After our success in City league the previous season (Fall '22), we were moved up to Eastern League… and continued our winning ways! Both JV and Varsity were dedicated in the weight room and all 3 teams had successful seasons and continued to grow and improve. We again faced numerous tough opponents, including many higher-ranked teams to help prepare us for league play (23-14 overall for Varsity!). Our teams never backed down, and the MBHS gym (The Cove) was rocking for our home games, especially for our 19th annual Bucs Bash: we took 2nd place overall, out of 20 teams! And our Freshman & JV teams did an outstanding job of working and supporting during the event.
We also hosted our 3rd annual Dig Pink Event: great job by Annika Wester & Rosie Nunez. Over $3,700 was raised!
Varsity qualified for CIF Playoffs in Division III again: we defeated Santana at home 3-0 in the first round, then barely fell to Imperial 2-3 in East County to conclude the season. Even with the heartbreaking loss at Imperial, we finished high enough in the CIF power rankings to be moved up to Division II for next year. Congratulations to all your hard work.
We are also graduating 8 seniors this year and those are big shoes to fill… thank you for all you hard work and contributions in building up MBHS Girls Volleyball! Graduating Seniors: Justyne Higman, Keira Hoech, Ayla McCay, Casey McGee, Marissa Toliver, Maya Toliver, Lole Ulutu, Annika Wester.
Fall 2023 Record: 23-14 overall, 3-7 in Eastern League

What a vast improvement! After a very challenging schedule and putting in the work last year, it really paid off in our level of play :) During this season, we continued the tradition of our pre-season Day on the Bay for all 3 teams, each team played in 2-3 tournaments, we hosted our famous Annual 2-Day Bucs Bash tournament, hosted 2nd Annual Dig Pink event, Senior Night, and tied for first in City League!
Our Freshman Team went undefeated in all of their matches, congratulations!
We hosted our 2rd annual Dig Pink Event… great job by Annika Wester & Justyne Higman with their organization for this great event. Over $4,200 was raised!
We qualified for CIF playoffs in Division III, defeated West Hills at home for our first round game, then unfortunately fell to Foothills Christian to end our great season.
Fall 2022 Record: 22-15 overall, 6-2 City League (T-1st with Clairemont & Canyon Hills)

SIX players named to City League All-League, Congratulations:
- First Team: Abigail Crosbie, Simone Hekier, Maya Toliver
- Second Team: Justyne Higman, Ayla McCay, Lauren Upton
(by winning league, we were able to have more players!)
Great job by our Seniors: Abbie Crosbie, Simone Hekier, Abey Holman, Greta Mezzetti, and Lauren Upton.
Congratulations from your coaches: Coach Barb (Varsity), Coach Austin (JV) and Coach Claire (Freshman)
FULLY-MASKED season, following ever-changing Covid guidelines and restrictions, including various quarantines... but at least we were able to have a season! After tryouts, we kicked off our season outdoors with a program team-building outing at Mission Bay (paddle-boarding, water-ballon toss, JEGS olympics, etc.) and team photos at the beach.
It was obvious how much everyone missed being able to play sports and be together!
We played a jam-packed schedule against very strong opponents and maximized our improvement and level of play, along with starting weight training 2x/week for Varsity (and half of the JV team participated as well!). Each team (Frosh/JV/Varsity) participated in 2-3 tournaments, learned a lot, hosted our first-ever DIG PINK event, hosted Bucs Bash (after skipping a year due to Covid), and had a memorable Senior Night as well. Despite our final record, the amount of player and team improvement was dramatic.
Everyone continued to wear masks for EVERY practice and game, and we followed various evolving Covid restrictions and criteria throughout the season, including a few quarantine episodes... but we made it through the entire season!
What is JEGS? Why it was our seniors, of course: Jayden, Edie, Grace, Sophie
Fall 2021 Record: 7-29 overall, 1-7 in Eastern League
Rankings: #815 in CA, #73 in San Diego
We also had THREE players named to Eastern League All-League, Congratulations:
- First Team honors: Jayden Higman and Simone Hekier
- Second Team honors: Abigail Crosbie
Congratulations from your coaches: Coach Barb (Varsity), Coach Austin (JV) and Coach Brittany (Freshman)
Well, 2020-2021 was a strange year indeed! After coach Steve Upp retired in Spring 2020, Barb Birnbaum was hired and began planning for the Fall 2020 season... Even though we were in a pandemic, Coach Barb began scheduling and planning for the Fall, but August 2020 tryouts never happened. The Fall Girls Volleyball season kept getting postponed: to late Fall, then mid-December, then late Winter... Then we received permission from SDUSD to hold outdoor practices on campus in February, so we set up grass volleyball nets outdoors and held open workouts for all interested players for 5 weeks and over 70 MBHS players participated. Then, on very short notice, we were allowed to get into the gym and have tryouts and we quickly began our 3-week mini-season. We played our league games and two non-league opponents, celebrated Senior Night, and the season ended as quickly as it started... at least we had those 3 weeks!
We followed all Covid-19 safety protocols, including wearing masks at all practices and games, social-distancing, and most games had no spectators allowed, but we all appreciated the opportunity to at least have our memorable mini-season!
We had FIVE players named to Eastern League All-League:
- First Team: Jerne Ward, Mila Anderson and Jayden Higman
- Second Team: Maya Jessee and Abigail Crosbie
Congrats to our graduating Seniors: Mila Anderson, Nyla Hekier, Maya Jessee, Anna Klestinec and Jerne Ward
Congratulations from your coaches: Coach Barb (Varsity & Frosh) and Coach Malia McGuinness (JV)
